Is it mandatory to wear a costume to participate in Arde Lucus?
It is not mandatory to attend in costume, but most visitors do, and the experience is much more immersive. The atmosphere of the event relies on collective costuming: the more authentic your costume, the more you participate in the spirit of Arde Lucus. There are areas of the Roman and Gallaecian camps where it is highly recommended to be in character.
Which costume is the most authentic for Arde Lucus?
There are two main themes: Romans (legionaries, centurions, matrons, priestesses) and Gallaecians / Celts (warriors, druids, villagers). Both are authentic. Roman costumes are more striking due to the armor and reds. Gallaecian costumes are more rustic, with earth tones, wools, and leathers. Choose based on which part of the event you want to feel most comfortable in.
When should I buy my costume for Arde Lucus?
We recommend buying your costume between March and early May. The most popular sizes sell out in May, and handmade costumes have longer manufacturing times. If you leave your purchase until June, it is most likely that the sizes you need will be out of stock or you will have to pay for express shipping.
